Elephant Butte Lake |
Today we moved from our temporary campsite to a more permanent one. We've signed up for 4 nights here now, leaving Friday. Today we toured around a bit, refreshing our memories of the roads in Elephant Butte and the nearby town of Truth or Consequences (yes, it was named for the TV show).
As often happens in this type of area, Gambel's Quail scurry around in the early morning looking for edible goodies:
I wasn't quick enough to get pictures of the mob that showed up in our yard for a bit. They even flew up into a mesquite tree and ran around on the branches, looking for bugs I'd assume.

Here's a few photos of Elephant Butte Lake. The lake is a shrinking reservoir, made by damming the Rio Grande river many years ago.

You can see the lines where the water level used to be, in earlier years |
The marina. Lots of boating on the Lake. |
We've seen a number of flights of Sandhill cranes flying over in the evening, usually heading more-or-less southwest:
Here's our new campsite this morning:

That area you are in brings back memories for us. There are some neat old western towns near you. Hillside and Chloride come to mind and they are out there in Apache land. A nice scenic back road over to Silver City as well. Have you found Turtle Mountain yet. It's right there at T&C across the river.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the ideas Al. We've been to Chloride a couple of times on earlier trips, and to Silver City. Hadn't heard about Hillside or Turtle MTN, will do some research.
DeleteLove those Gambel's Quail.
ReplyDeleteWe can't resist smiling when the quail are scurrying around.
ReplyDeleteSad to see the reservoir shrinking.
