Whitehorse to Dawson City YK

It was still 13C for our 6:20 PDT getaway today. We were able to sit outside for several hours yesterday afternoon/evening, so NICE to not have bugs bothering us. We had very little problem with bugs this trip, once we got out of Ontario. Whitehorse must be a garden spot, as it dropped to 8C by the time we were 10km out of town. This is a lovely clean city with lots of happy and healthy-looking people.

An early-morning stop along the way:

As soon as we hit a gravel stretch though, we got our second stone chip in the windshield, this one with 3 small chips right in my line of vision when driving. Will have to get those smoothed out, but they can wait until we get home.

My ears are bothering me again, both are infected. The problem didn’t get fixed until we were on our way back through Whitehorse.

The roads from Whitehorse to Dawson City are mostly gravelled. The only wildlife we saw were squirrels (lots of them darting across the road, seemingly only when a vehicle is coming), ravens and magpies. Construction goes on 7 days a week here during the short season.

Here a couple of cyclists and their gear were being loaded into the Pilot truck, as it's difficult and dangerous for bicyclists to pedal through the construction zones:

Note that those are packs on the cycles, not somebody bending over in the back of the truck.

We stopped and cooked a good breakfast at Five Finger Rapids, a historical spot on the Yukon R.

Warming up again, up to 15C. No cell service, not even 911, since Carmacks. Up to 25C at noon.

We got in to Dawson about 3pm. Since we wanted to browse the town, we signed up at the only cg in town, very expensive especially for a no-hookup site. They can get away with it though, as the cg was full overnight. We also filled up with the most expensive diesel of the trip at a station on the edge of town, the only choice.

There is a pretty nice drive up into the hills at the edge of town too. You can get views of the town and river from up there:

Cathie on a giant-scale bench:

We roamed around Dawson for a while, but it was so hot it likely didn't get a fair shake from us. I think an evening tour would have been better, and maybe a visit to some of the evening entertainment.

In the Tourist Info centre, they had some local art on display. We wanted to take this one home:
