Tok to Haynes Junction

At 7am ADT it was 13C, cloudy and bright. It was a good night’s sleep for both of us, and now we headed east towards Haines.

We had a really nice stop at the Tetlin Wildlife Refuge, a huge reserve area.

The Colorado couple manning the info center were very good. We watched a short film about the refuge, and had a lovely view for our egg & toast breakfast.

We’re seeing lots of swans on ponds along the way, and some moose browsing the edge of a lake. Lots of construction and delays on the road down to Haines Junction. No problem at all at the border crossing back into the Yukon. Snow capped peaks on one side, mountain meadows on the other, a real pretty drive.

Kluane Lake was a real surprise to us. We both had the idea it’s a very remote spot, accessible by hiking or helicopter. This is somewhat true, but the lake and at least some of Kluane Park are right beside the highway, and simply gorgeous. The lake (at least that day) was a deep turquoise colour.

We stopped at the Kluane info center at 4pm, just in time to see the 1-person staff driving away after closing. We did see quite a number of Dahl sheep, about 40 of them, up on the high hillsides around the center. This one was closer and didn't move around:

Very windy now but a sunny 20C. Views of Mt Logan off in the distance as we drove along.

We were camped at Kluane RV Park in Haines Junction by 5:45 PDT. It’s a basic park, but has showers, flush toilets and a lovely view, so it’s all good. $21 Cdn unserviced (would have been $32 with w/e), with a strong cell signal so we were able to access email etc.

We were out of eggs among other things, so visited a small grocery store. The smallest egg cartons they had (really the only size) was 18 eggs. We didn’t want that many, but did want some eggs so bought them, and fueled up the van on the way back to the cg.
