Telegraph Cove whale tour, and on to Campbell River BC

This morning arrived somewhat foggy and misty, but lots of atmosphere and it cleared up as the morning went along.

The tour left right from Telegraph Cove at 9 am. The Captain said this Stubbs tour was the original whale watching tour, back in the 70's. This area is said to be ideal for whales, because of the water conditions and lots of food (salmon, seals, herring etc). Many sport fishermen are out here too, chasing the salmon mostly.

Ironic poster, as we didn't see any Orcas today

Lots of fishing boats returning from night fishing:

Here's some of the sea life we saw:

2 mature Bald Eagles

2 immature Bald Eagles

Harbour seals

Humpback whale coming up for air

Humpback waving Bye Bye for now
The humpbacks can be uniquely identified by the patterns on their tails. Often it's the white markings, but it can be injuries to the tail too. Notches never fill in once formed.

At a nearby restaurant:

We're set up in the not-so-scenic Walmart in Campbell River for the night. This leaves us with an easy (we hope!!) 2 1/2 hr drive tomorrow to Departure Bay Nanaimo, to catch a 12:15 ferry. We'll aim to get there about 11.

Apparently Vancouver is very smoky right now, as well as Victoria and the southern Vancouver Island. We'll likely encounter some smoke around Nanaimo tomorrow, as there is an active fire near there. The Okanagan area is very smoky, we expect to take a more northerly route this time, up to Whistler and on from there. We'll see.

Our approximate route today:
