OK Falls to Kitty Coleman Prov Park BC

Catching up today. Tuesday morning we left OK Falls for a travel day. Reminder - you can click on any picture to see a larger version.

The park at the bottom of Skaha Lake was a lot emptier this morning than on Sunday:

We headed across hwy 3A to 3 West. Beautiful drive. No fires or firefighting visible, but lots of haze in the air.

By the time we got to Chilliwack we had to stop, it was a short but tiring drive today. Lots of traffic as we got closer to Vancouver, and very warm. We got the last spot at Cultus Lake prov park, which is a large busy park. Our site was shaded, a relief today.

Mossy trees in the Park

Wednesday Morning...
Up at 3:30, getting ready to leave about 4 to make our 7:45 ferry to Nanaimo. Should be about 1 1/2 hr drive, and we will make breakfast once we're checked in there. Nice drive in the early morning, little traffic. Hwy 1 took us right to #17, a fairly new road at the outskirts of Vancouver that went right to the Tsawwassen ferry docks, perfect timing. Most of #17 is too new for our old Streets & Trips mapper.

The GPS route from the Tsawwassen ferry dock. Looks like 5 ferry routes leave from here:

We got on a fairly large ferry, it left right on time:

More haze ashore over the Island(s):

It was a bit breezy at times out on the ferry deck. So much for Cathie's nice new haircut:

Heading north from Nanaimo  on 19A after crossing to Vancouver Island, we came across a real nice spot for a picnic lunch:

We're now camped for a couple of nights at a little local park. It's officially a Provincial Park, but it's run by the municipality here, and not shown in the Provincial Park guide book we have. Kitty Coleman Prov Park

It's not much of a campsite, and the facilities are sparse:

However, here is the view of the beach in front of our parked van! $15/night.

That's the main BC coast over there

The view from a tent site just down the way from us

In front of our campsite (across the cg road)

3 Mature ladies on a blow-up air mattress, towed by a paddleboarder

Setting sun is off to the left. Driftwood in foreground.

Cruise ships passing by

Lots of sport fishermen using the launching ramp

The water, she is so big...

View across the c.g. road from our van site. Smoky.

No whale pictures unfortunately, but this morning (Thurs) I was sitting out in my lounge chair with a morning coffee. Whales were regularly spouting off in the distance, a hunting pod, not sure what type of whale but varied sizes, clear with binoculars.

Fantastic weather, much better than our previous Vancouver Island visit in 1994.

  1. Tsawwassen is a First Nations name meaning "facing the ocean" which is very appropriate for that location.
