Dempster Part 1, Whitehorse to Tombstone Park YK

We've been out of touch for a few days, unable to get any kind of cell or Wifi connection. This is part 1 of our little catch-up series, going to the Dempster Highway.

Newbie note: to step from post to post, click on the navigation buttons at the bottom of each post, down below any comments. It should look something like this (except for the red circles!):

If you're at the latest post the "Newer Post" button won't display.

Before hitting the road today, we took a walk around the Hi Country campground as we often do, and saw a couple of interesting things:

No fast walking allowed here!

This van was the runabout, towed by the large motorhome in front when underway

The campground is a CanaDream RV rental outlet

We set off towards Dawson City on a pretty decent morning. A few clouds but nothing serious.

We hardly left Whitehorse when this nice little beaver pond caught our eye:

The industrious beaver was nearby

Lots of scenery along the way:

More little Lupins add colour to the drive

Nesting swans, Tundra probably

As usual, some construction to deal with:

The scrapers often need a push from a bulldozer to pick up their load

Xtra large dump trucks used here

This gal passed us! She seemed to get a kick out of us filming it

Size comparison with the truck camper

They were wetting this section to keep down the dust. What a good idea!

Rapids on the Yukon River

Imagine floating your pioneer raft into these rapids! Only one right way through.

After fueling up in Dawson City, we backtracked to the start of the Dempster Highway:

We swapped picture-taking here with some German tourists

Dire warnings

The entrance to the Dempster. No more pavement until the return.

Clouds were gathering, but we carried on, with some trepidation, heading for a campground about 70 km in:

Serious-looking clouds

Maybe we'll miss them

Nope! Thunder, lightning, rain and hail, we had it all.

That's hail in the above picture, it fell just before we got to that spot. We made it to our wet campground ok though:

A number of motorcycle-based tenters. Glad we're in a van!

Luckily there is a shelter with a wood stove for the tenter meals etc,

Our campsite. Hoping for better things tomorrow!

  1. Thank goodness for the van - it is so miserable arriving at a wet campsite and setting up a tent in the rain. Lovely photos again, such amazing views on this trip!
