We decided to browse around Whitehorse today (Saturday). First order of business was finding some breakfast downtown. Apparently early-morning (9am) breakfast is not a common thing in Whitehorse. Most eateries seem to open for lunch or even just dinner. We did end up finding a good spot though:
Neat name for a bagel shop |
Hard at work |
Lots of fresh choices. We both had a BLT. |
Cathie's poppyseed bagel choice |
We found a nice spot to sit right along the Yukon River multi-use trail:
We came across some interesting buildings on our walking tour:
Apartments |
Next door, more apartments |
These buildings below were actually 3-D paintings on the back of retail stores, like the ordinary one on the left. The back doors and maybe some windows are real, but the rest is all painting:
A museum had incorporated a couple of cabins in a neat way, outside but sheltered:

A 2590 lb copper nugget |
After some more browsing downtown it was back to the van for the day, exciting stuff like laundry and cleaning van windows. We did have a visitor though, a young robin dropped by to say hello, until Mom lured him away with a nice juicy bug:
We had seen some ads for a boat ride on the Yukon River, so after meeting the Captain we set that up for the evening. We left at 6pm for about 3 hr cruise, still very light at 9pm of course. Captain Ken kept us entertained and informed as we cruised. Just us as passengers.
A small boat, we were a bit nervous about that at first |
We did see some wildlife:
A busy beaver |
The visible trails are from beaver, back and forth for the aspen on the hill |
Hiking trails all along the river. We're still in Whitehorse town limits here! |
Lots of seating choice along the way for hikers rest stops with a view |
Scooting right along at times |
A walkway across the river at the Narrows |
This is what it looks like from above |
Happy passengers |
A couple of pictures of the Whitehorse landslide area after the cleanup. The closure for 7-8 weeks of this main artery into downtown was a real pain for a lot of residents. The detour was a much longer route, and led to lots of traffic congestion.
This is what's left on the hill that melted. Still a concern. |
The pylons were added to reduce the damage next time |
We have no plans for Sunday, except as a rest day. We'll be moving along on Monday, heading further north. Internet access will likely be spotty, but we'll update when we can.
On many great pictures of UR trips!!!kind of imagined Whitehorse like that !?

What a great time in Whitehorse, thanks for sharing it. Donna B
ReplyDeleteDo they have security for that Copper?! That’s a lot of money on display!! Nice pics and Caths bagel looks mouth watering! The painting on the back of the building is so neat!!
ReplyDeleteLove the painting on the back of the building, and glad you grabbed the chance to get out for a cruise. Where did the "view from above" pic come from? The balconies on those apartment buildings look like they may violate a few building codes...!
