Amherst Shore NS to Blomidon Provincial Park NS

A leisurely start today, we left Amherst Shores about 9am, sunny and 17C. Nearby is a day use Prov Park called Northport. We think this used to be the very rustic private park that we overnighted in, many years ago.

The road surface on the Sunrise Trail has been greatly improved since we were over it last. It’s mostly good pavement now. After taking #6 to Tatamagouche we took #311 south to Truro and stopped at an Atlantic Superstore (Loblaws) for some supplies, then headed out #236 and #215.

We stopped near Maitland to watch a fairly mild Tidal Bore come up the Shubenacadie River. They have converted the stub of an old bridge to a good overlook that juts out into the river for a good view, and had an interesting talk from a guide, all free admission:

We watched about 20 “rafts” (Zodiac type boats) show up to follow the bore up the river:

There was an incident nearby involving an ambulance for a fellow mudsliding down the tidal hills. Apparently it's quite easy to get in trouble in the mud:

Later we stopped for a hot dog picnic lunch at another free Provincial day-use area, Burntcoat Head, site of some of the most dramatic Fundy tides:

Carrying on, we worked our way to #101 near Windsor, and took exit 11 north through Canning along #358 towards Blomidon Prov Park

The road to the park is about 16 km off the main road. We were able to get a nice spot in the park overflow area (nicer than a lot of the official sites) so booked for 2 nights as the weekend gets very busy here apparently. The center of the park has large open areas that are mowed, with some trees around, some of which made our overflow spot quite nice.

The park overlooks Minas Basin

We cooked a great supper with fresh scallops, salmon and new potatoes:
