Moving from Jackson to Yellowstone area

Off at 7:35, 9C, cloudy-bright and no wind, good touring weather. We made lots of stops on our way to Yellowstone.
The Tetons are magnificent

We went in the South entrance, and were actually starting to wonder why we were here. That end is pretty boring unless you like a nice tree-lined drive (haha, spoiled aren't we!).

We stopped in to the Old Faithful area, and went in to a building. Decided we needed a coffee, so got one and sat at a table beside a window. Wondered what all those people were doing out there. It never occurred to us that Old Faithful would be this close.

Then Old Faithful started to erupt!

We had managed to get a window seat just as it started, what dumb luck. Then did a walking tour around the boardwalks and paths in the area. There's lots more to see than "just" Old Faithful!

The main lodge

This area kind of defines the uniqueness of Yellowstone. Yes there are mountains, rivers, wildlife... but it's the thermal activity that sets Yellowstone apart. It's so accessible in the Old Faithful area, parts of it even for wheelchairs. It's so dramatic and interesting it's easy to forget you're standing on a very thin layer above all this boiling-hot activity.

After we left the area the road follows the Firehole River for quite a ways, very pretty. Good swimming holes apparently, but we didn't. Our trailer was a parking issue, several parking places don't allow RV`s.

About 1:40 we arrived at Red Rock RV Park, near Island Park ID, for our 4-night reservation. It's a pretty park with mountain views in the distance. Way off the highway, touted as much cheaper than places closer to West Yellowstone, it's also very dog-friendly.

Nice place, but in hindsight I wish we had spent at least some time camped right in Yellowstone. It would have been easier for casual drives around the park. We cooked burgers inside on the Griddler, too many bugs outside for comfortable cooking.
