Joshua Tree to Anza-Borrego State Park

We woke to a beautiful sunrise today:

We were heading for Borrego Springs today, and got an early start. Once the coffee was made we headed in to JTNP again, and used the campground facilities and dump station there.

We had decided to go back into the park today to visit the Cholla Gardens. It was so busy yesterday we couldn’t get parked anywhere near there. It was a real nice tour this morning:

Cholla are real pretty cacti, and really nasty to contact (we hear!).

The little bits on the ground are from the ends of the arms of the cactus, and each bit can take root and grow into a new cactus:

The little barrel cacti are changing colour and preparing to flower, likely in March:

When we headed south and out of the park today, we drove across Box Canyon Road to Mecca, instead of the Indio/I10 route we took to the park. What a pretty drive this is, MUCH nicer than I10!

The drive was quite green (for a desert), lots of wild lupins and other plants.

On the way along the western shores of the Salton Sea today, we passed some large-scale agriculture:

After looking closer, we realized these were all green peppers:

We also saw huge fields of grape vines, in various stages of leafing out. And lemon trees at the side of the road.

Tonight, and likely for the next 2 nights, we're camped at the Anza Borrego Desert State Park. After boondocking for the past week, this is pretty luxurious! We don't have services at our site, but flush toilets and showers are just a few steps away, and it's a really pretty setting. $23/night, seniors rate.

After setting up (pretty simple with a van camper and no hookups), a rest, showers and lunch we went out for a drive around the area.

We found a few of the metal sculptures the area is known for:

We'll be touring the area more over the next few days, hoping for more weather like we had today! It was up to 24C with a nice soft breeze.
