Camped in Rocky Harbour

Ever wonder why they nickname Newfoundland "The Rock"?

We decided to spend the weekend at a private campground in Rocky Harbour, mostly to get some electricity and cell phone access. It's about 300 km further north, a convenient location for Gros Morne National Park and the Western Brook Pond boat tour.  We purchased an annual National Parks pass, a lot more expensive than the seasonal pass for Newfoundland Provincial parks, but worth it to us.

As we moved north this morning from Cheeseman park and on past Codroy Valley, the hills got higher and greener, and the temperature moved up. Soon we came upon the famous Wreckhouse area. This is often mentioned in the weather news, as the contours of the area can focus winds and develop some high speeds. It's a flat area, exposed to the sea on one side and wrapped in high hills on the other.

We're camped for 2 nights right in Rocky Harbour. We did a bit of touring of the southern parts of Gros Morne this afternoon, and booked a boat tour tomorrow on the famous Western Brook Pond.

There's actually a seafood shop in Rocky Harbour, and we'll be cooking our own dinner tonight! We got 1/2 lb of scallops, and a couple of small pieces of Halibut this time. It would be an expensive meal at home, but yummy and a lot cheaper than dining out.

Here's the rocky harbour at Rocky Harbour:

Nearby Norris Point is also quite scenic, with a view of some of the Tablelands (exposed rock) across the bay:
